𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟑, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 – North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) has started building its College of Medicine and signed a partnership with Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center (ASTMMC), complementary to the offering of the College of Medicine. NEMSU will construct the Php 95 million six-story medical building (Phase 1) to offer premier healthcare education and produce top-notch healthcare practitioners from the region.

Congressman Romeo S. Momo, Sr., the primary sponsor of House Bill No. 8825, establishing the NEMSU College of Medicine, has secured the necessary funding for this project — the Department of Public Works and Highways - 1st District Engineering Office, led by Engr. Ruel B. Bantugan facilitated the funding. NEMSU President Nemesio G. Loayon and ASTMMC Medical Center Chief Dr. Janice V. Pagaran-Alcordo signed an agreement declaring ASTMMC as the base hospital for the new program. This partnership ensures that medical students receive practical, hands-on training in real-world healthcare.

The medical building will complement the premier healthcare education in Surigao del Sur and beyond. It aims to produce premier healthcare practitioners who are Surigaonon for the Surigaonon.

With this initiative, students who do not have the financial resources to study in private institutions yet wish to attain a healthcare education will have the opportunity to study as the university strives to produce prospective doctors shaped by a curriculum tailored to address the community's needs in the status quo.

Governor Alexander T. Pimentel and Dr. Fredrick Amihan of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) expressed their support for the project, highlighting its potential to transform healthcare education and services in the province. The College of Medicine is expected to open in the 2025 academic year and complete Phase 1 construction by June 2025. The next phase will be implemented in the future to ensure its full operation.
