In a clash of wits and words, the North Eastern Mindanao State University's Debate Guild brought back the coveted Roving Trophy with Team NEMSU A, consisting of John Hope Plaza, Jericka Soria, and John Damort Guingguing, who also secured the Top 3 Best Speakers slot in the competition.
Surigao Intervarsity Parliamentary Debate Championship (SIPDC) is a Surigao-based tournament that welcomes debaters all across the province. During the 5th installment of the tournament, NEMSU was able to bag the championship but was unable to sustain it in the subsequent edition due to the lack of competing teams.
Meanwhile, NEMSU B, composed of Piaa Stanly Samontina, Prince John Bert Buiza, and Reach Chell Javier, also made waves in the competition in the pre-semifinals, bagging several best speaker awards in the process.
Competing adjudicators from the Guild also displayed dominance, as Daniel Pedarse, Rysan Engrova, Aubrey Macalde, and Rejonh Kenneth Alabat secured their spots as breaking adjudicators, as well as reaping several Best Judge awards.
Debate Adviser Mark Jade Burlat expressed his gratitude to the NEMSU administration for the financial assistance and shared that the overwhelming support from family and friends was the reason that fueled their participation.
"With the Roving Trophy back to NEMSU again, we will continue our rigorous yet fun trainings, breed new competing teams, and cultivate the culture of debate in the university," Mr. Burlat added.
It is definitely a huge leap for the Guild from a budding debate organization to an established powerhouse in the Surigao circuit.
